Detectors

Nu-Trek is developing Detectors for Ionizing Radiation as well as Neutron Detectors.

Detectors for Ionizing Radiation: In addition to the Monolithic Nuclear Event Detectors that uses process transistors to detect nuclear event gammas, Nu-Trek also developed ultra fast GaAs photoconductive detectors (PCDs) with 30 ps response times, as well as compact readout circuits for solid-state dosimeters.

  • Monolithic NED, NT-NED-1001. Nuclear event detectors (NEDs) are used to initiate circumvention, following the occurrence of a nuclear blast. The NT-NED-1001 is 1/15 the volume of leading commercial part, is SEE immune, and can be calibrated in-situ.
  • Dosimeter Readout, NT-Dose-4001. The Dosimeter Readout is used in conjunction with a RADFET to determine the accumulated dose during space missions.
  • PnP Dosimeter. Plug-and-Play dosimeter based on the Dosimeter Readout and Air Force protocols and form factors. Used in PnP satellites to radically shorten satellite assembly times.
  • Ultra fast X-Ray Detectors. Suite of GaAs PCDs with response times as fast as 30 ps. Includes detectors designed for soft x-rays (< 10 KeV), hard x-rays (> 10 keV), and x-ray detection in intense neutron environments, such as neutron reactors.

Neutron Detectors: Nu-Trek is developing a solid-state neutron PIN diode (n-PIN) that resembles a chocolate chip cookie. It is composed of a Si PIN diode (dough) and neutron converters (B or Li) that are interspersed within the Si PIN diode (chocolate chips). The n-PIN is being developed for active interrogation of special nuclear material (SNM) and other applications that can benefit from a high efficiency neutron detector with good gamma rejection. Theoretical sensitivity limit approaches 100%; 50-70% can be achieved in practical configurations.

The n-PIN efficiency versus pocket diameter. As can be seen from the figure, over 50 % efficiency can be obtained in practical configurations.
